“It took me four years to paint like Raphael, but a lifetime to paint like a child.” – Pablo Picasso

It was with Art made out of old second hand booksthese eloquent words that the Camps Bay Preparatory School art auction came together. As the art teacher at Camps Bay Primary I was a little intimidated by the talent, that this auction promised, will be coming to me in a year or two!

Our school is privileged with having many talented parents who are happy to be involved in the children’s education! Each of the preparatory classes was assigned an artist or designer from this parent body. These artists and designers then taught the learners a specialized technique which resulted in each learner producing an individual piece (like the one on the left), as well as taking part in creating a collaborative piece.006

It was however the presentation of the pieces as a total which truly impressed. This was not due to the work of a few, specialized parents but rather many parents and teachers! It will be our turn as the Primary School to put on an auction next year and apart from feeling a little nervous, I am excited that I will also have access to this huge resource of motivated parents.
